At MHA, we have been quite taken with the ideas of Karl Polanyi, an economic historian, who fought in World War I, and lived through several revolutions and wars in his lifetime. Karl Polanyi felt it was the responsibility of his generation to understand why the two World Wars had happened, and to make sure that they never happened again. We have found that Polanyi’s perspective ties directly to the MHA philosophy, and work in helping people to understand the tragedy and danger of excessive linear thinking (as shown in the power of the market society to govern our lives), and the need to refocus on non-linear (to make society our top priority). Knowing about Karl Polanyi’s biography and work, and why he developed it, is also very helpful when we are reading other researchers’ and writers’ interpretation of his work.
